General Principles Traditional foreign language learning methods can not be repeated. As early as 1921, Dr. Harold Palmer pointed out that there was a major difference between understanding a language and learning to use it. Since then, many effective techniques have been developed that enable students to learn a foreign language. In the light of the modern and intensive study of foreign language learning, no one is fundamentally skeptical about the gradual formation of Palmer’s fundamental principles in the future, although there are still considerable differences in how best to implement those principles. Despite the great progress, teachers in many countries still cling to old-fashioned methods and, to some extent, simply want to keep the stereotypes they themselves used to learning foreign languages for ever. Therefore, it may not be inappropriate to reiterate some of the basic principles and briefly discuss how best to put it into practice in classroom teaching.
