From 1895 to 1945 Japan forcibly took Taiwan for 50 years due to the unequal Sino-Japanese “Treaty of Shimonoseki.” For its own national interests and needs, the Japanese colonists first used Taiwan as the base for the export of Japanese raw materials and capital and later used it as a wartime munition and a base for “southward” (South China and Southeast Asia) bases As a result, the economy of Taiwan has achieved some degree of development on the basis of its own. At present, in order to find a historical basis for the “Taiwan’s independence” theory, or for other political purposes, the “Taiwan’s independence” elements on the Taiwan island have praised Japan’s colonial rule, claiming that “Japan has brought Taiwan’s modernization,” and are contributing to Taiwan’s development today “Laid the foundation.” To clarify right and wrong, this paper intends to explore the essence of Taiwanese economic development during the Japanese occupation.
