This article describes a Sea Owl passive identification device (PID) developed by GEC Sensors Co., Ltd., sponsored by the Department of Defense to meet the needs of Lynx helicopters. PID is an easy-to-use, stabilized infrared sensor system that provides exceptional long-range viewing capability in adverse weather conditions day and night. With dual-field optics and advanced signal processing, the system not only allows for large area monitoring and detection but also enables the identification, tracking and tracking of objects over very long distances. PID can be equipped with a variety of helicopters, through the 1553B data bus communication with combat information systems or weapons systems. It meets most of the requirements for offshore and border monitoring applications. The device’s advanced design principles with high reliability, built-in test equipment (BITE) and easy maintenance features. Discusses some of the issues that have been overcome to meet stringent environmental requirements, notably PID turret requirements, including the possibility of using the system on fixed-wing aircraft and using alternate control methods to improve performance.
