In 2007 and 2008, Xstrata Copper’s Mount Isa Smelter conducted a series of technical improvements to address the problem of high copper losses in rotary holding furnace (RHF) slag. In 2006 and 2007, the copper loss in the rotary insulation slag exceeded 3%. Australian Chaoda copper smelter will thermodynamic model and viscosity model used in the production. In order to reduce the copper loss in the rotary holding furnace slag, RHF Key Performance Indicators (RHF KPIs) were developed for the rotary holding furnace. “RHF KPIs Theory ” has been applied to Mount Isa copper smelter. Copper losses in the rotary insulation slag dropped from 3.1% in 2007 to 0.76% in 2009. In 2009 and 2010, the average copper loss in rotary kiln insulation was about 0.9%.
