Alice Monroe’s short stories often use all kinds of small towns in Ontario as a story background, using the cool, precise and even ruthless pen and paper to tear apart the trivial and boring appearance of the town life, making it difficult for people to face Emotions: Confusion, Helplessness, Vulnerability, Hypocrisy, Jealousy, Cruelty, Decisiveness, and Resistance to Destiny - are all presented to the reader. In Monroe’s famous “Escape”, the reader is presented with a complex connotation of a simple story through the use of switching narrative structures and chronological sequences.
