“Extended Air Defense Systems” - considered by the German Defense Ministry to be ATBMs (anti-tactical ballistic missiles) - are no longer central to West Germany’s national security considerations for the 85’s and 86’s. Public interest in anti-tactical ballistic missile defense has plummeted, with the ATBM, rarely mentioned by the ruling party, almost completely vetoed. A Conservative spokesman, not long ago, also explicitly underscored the importance of defensive tactical ballistic missiles for the NATO and is now silent on that issue. The Social Democrats and the Greens, who once opposed ATBM, have been given the say now because of their arms control. In the current social context of armed forces, the acceptability of air-defense systems is usually the same as that of emergency.
