The author describes the social and political significance of an exhibit held by Melvin Edwards in 1970. The works on display include sculptures made by artists with wire and chains and no longer exist. In March 1970, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City organized an exhibition for artist Melvin Edwards (born 1937), featuring Edwards’ sculptures created on specific grounds using barbed wire and chains works. Since this is the first time Whitney Museum of American Art held an exhibition for an African-American sculptor, Edwards’s historic face has entered into a period of complex and turbulent times
