Objective To understand the distribution of subcutaneous fat in 718-year-old Han students in Yunnan Province and to explore the distribution of subcutaneous fat in students. Methods The sum of the thickness of upper arm skinfold, the thickness of scapular skinfold and the skinfold of abdomen in Yunnan National Student Physical Fitness and Health Survey in 2010 was calculated and compared between urban and rural areas and between sexes. Results There was significant difference between male and female students in urban and rural areas. The skinfold thickness of boys and girls in urban areas was much larger than that of rural students. The gender differences were statistically significant. Conclusions Skinfold thickness is an index to evaluate the distribution and nutritional status of human subcutaneous fat. The development of skinfold thickness and nutrient intake are related to gender.
