对于第一次世界大战前后出现在西方各国文坛的除浪漫主义和现实主义文艺思潮以外的各种文艺流派,可笼统地称之为现代派.现代派文学在西方现代文学中占有重要的地位.它的另一译法是现代主义文学或先锋派文学.西方评论界习惯于称本世纪10~20年代的现代派文学为古典先锋派,称二次大战后的现代派为当代的“新先锋派”.“新先锋派”在二次大战后显露出不同风貌,如战后的表现主义,今日诗歌中的“象征派”、“未来派”、“超现实主义”等等,在小说中的“意识流”、“新现实主义”、“新小说”、“黑色幽默”以及“反戏剧”、“具体的诗”、“抽象的画”等领域,也可强烈地感受到20年代风靡一时的达达主义、超现实主义文学的影响,并使人联想起普鲁斯特与沃尔夫的遗产.
