The sluggish world market of machine tools that emerged in the early 1990s was affected by the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the turmoil in Eastern Europe, and the economic recession in the United States and Western Europe. In the early 1990s, the world machine tool market slumped. In 1991, the total value of world machine tool production was 40.86 billion US dollars. Compared with the previous year, it decreased by 10%; the total world machine tool import was US$158.7 billion, a decrease of 13%; and the total export value was US$19.077 billion, a decrease of 10%. In the current major export markets of China’s machine tools, US imports fell by 6.4%, the former Soviet Union by 50%, Yugoslavia by 36%, Romania by 24%, Italy by 12%, and Hong Kong’s machine tool sales decreased by 62%. In the world’s top 10 machine tool consumer markets, six are declining: the former Soviet Union (-40%), the United Kingdom (-20%), the United States (-19%), France (-19%), Switzerland (-18%) , Italy (-9%); four rises: Japan (+10%), China (+6%), Germany (+2%), South Korea (+2%).
