Indonesia’s Batam Island covers an area of 415 square kilometers, flat terrain, more hills and jungle, located in South East Asia financial and trade center south of Singapore, across the sea only 20 kilometers apart. It was originally a logistical base for Indonesia’s offshore oil exploration. Beginning in the 1970s, the Indonesian government was determined to develop and build Patan Island, declared the island an industrial special zone, and in 1978 proclaimed the island a free-trade zone free of duties.
