As digital video technology advances and integrates with the Internet, CCTV applications are moving from dedicated cable connections to full digital solutions. As we make this transition, we learn a lot from the evolution of computing technology - from the dominant host to the now-ubiquitous personal computer. This transition is expected to take place in the CCTV space as there is an increasing use of existing computer network resources for transmitting CCTV signals, eliminating the need to use dedicated cables. Other advantages include scalability, flexibility, and fault tolerance, which ultimately eliminates the need for multiplexers. What’s more, today’s network combined with the latest compression technology offers many parallel full-frame video streams, and multiplexers have so far not been able to provide several frames per second per camera. As a commodity camera by today’s standards, regains credibility by integrating more and more features and digital web interfaces.
