Although both Ashley and Reid are typical representatives of southerners in the 19th century, their character traits, their will to life, and their pursuit of value are very different. The former is the leader of the aristocracy but the escapee of the new era; the latter is a rebel of the aristocratic class, but it is the beach-goers of the new era. Their antagonisms reflect from one side the earth-shaking changes in the South after the Civil War and the violent collision of old and new cultures and values. The novel eventually replaced Reese as Reagan’s hero in the true sense, a symbolic illustration of the inevitable collapse of the old Southern plantation owners and the system of slavery, and at the same time, heralded the rise of the New South in a new world with strong momentum .
