袁犀是现实主义作家。伪满洲国时期,他发表了大量描写社会底层生活的小说,他关注底层写作的风格一直延续到1942年。1942年,由于叛徒出卖袁犀被捕入狱并经历了残酷的刑罚,不久被保释出狱。从此袁犀的文学创作焦点转向了知识青年的生活状态,他陆续创作了长篇小说《贝壳》《面纱》,并从不同角度对知识青年们的生活状态进行描写。青年们混乱的、醉生梦死的生活状态,不仅仅是社会个案,而是整个社会的真实写照——《贝壳》为沉迷于爱情幻想中的新女性们敲响了警钟,真正神圣的爱情也许只是一场春梦!即使新女性挣脱了家庭的束缚,强行与爱人结合在一起,最终也得不到她们期待的幸福生活,世俗生活会让这爱情变得暗淡无光,甚至将她们推向毁灭之路。这又回到了“娜拉出走后”的问题思考上。
