Safety for Outdoor Adventures
Workers’ Daily September 21
A group of experts from the Mountaineering Association of China and the Mountaineering Association of Shaanxi Province undertook an expedition from Tai Bai Mountain to Ao Mountain, the two highest peaks of the Qinling Mountains in south Shaanxi Province, to explore a safe route for mountain hikers.
In recent years, outdoor hiking has become very popular in China. But the number of accidents that led to casualties is on the rise. For many people, the charm of outdoor adventure lies in its mystery and uncertainty. However, many accidents took place during the trips due to the lack of preparation or insuffi cient knowl- edge and experience. When encountering extreme weather or danger, some hikers probably don’t know what to do.
In this situation, it is necessary for related professional organizations to make safety guidelines for hikers and provide training for those who are fond of exploring. A route map for wild mountains and forests will help hikers follow safe paths during their journey and avoid danger as much as possible. Furthermore, local governments should improve and enhance emergency services in mountain areas to launch timely rescue for those who are in danger.
The exploring expedition undertaken by the two mountaineering organizations is also meaningful to encourage joint efforts from the public to improve rescue operation systems.
The expedition route explored by professional organizations doesn’t mean absolute safety to hikers. Outdoor hikers should raise their awareness of safety issues and not try to risk their lives to pursue excitement in adventures. Electric Vehicles, New Opportunities
Oriental Outlook September 28
On September 9, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced that China has been preparing to set a deadline for automakers to stop producing cars driven by gasoline or diesel engines. China will become the seventh country, following France, the Netherlands, Germany, Norway, the United Kingdom and India, to propose a ban on production and sale of such vehicles.
In the meanwhile, China is stepping up to promote the development of new energy vehicles (NEVs), with electric vehicles as key.
Since the Chinese Government came up with a strategy to develop NEVs in 2009, the nation has made great efforts to support its electric vehicle industry, such as providing subsidies for car buyers, building an increasing number of charging piles, and adopting policies to encourage the research and development of battery technology.
According to the 2017 annual outlook report on global electric cars released by the International Energy Agency, China’s electric automobile sales in 2016 accounted for 32 percent of the world’s total, making it the largest electric car market.
The growth of the market has in turn driven technological development. Taking battery technology as an example, the energy density of battery power on average has increased by 30 percent, while the cost of production has been cut by 30 percent from 2016 to 2017.
China’s homegrown electric automobile brands are expected to enjoy high-speed growth in the near future. But China’s electric automakers still face challenges. They need to improve technologies in terms of vehicle structure, materials and production process, and control systems. Especially, a number of core technologies including high-power motors are monopolized by foreign companies.
Plastic Waste Control
Nanfang Daily September 20
Recently, a news report that the rise of the take-out food industry will lead to a disaster for future generations has spread widely in cyberspace. It again raises public concerns over the worsening plastic pollution.
Over 600 million people in China now order take-out food online, and 63.6 percent of them do so more than three times a week. It is estimated that 400 million disposable packing boxes, 400 million plastic bags and 400 million disposable utensils are produced and discarded every week. The huge plastic waste causes a serious environmental problem. However, this is only the tip of the iceberg. Plastic materials are also widely used in the express delivery, clothes, furniture, electronics and other industries. Plastic waste is hard to degrade. Simply burying or burning it is the most commonly used way to deal with plastic waste. But that will contaminate the air and water, causing more health problems. To tackle this environmental challenge, the State Council had implemented a ban on free plastic bags in retailing in 2008. The use of plastic bags has been largely decreased in large supermarkets and shopping malls.
But the ban seems to have less effect on the take-out food and express delivery. Therefore, the government should push forward research and development of technology for plastic degradation and encourage companies to use degradable materials to replace plastic packages.
In the short term, recycling is an environmentally friendly way to deal with solid plastic waste. Many kinds of plastic waste can be reused, such as plastic bottles. Meanwhile, the public should cultivate habits of sorting garbage and recycling plastic waste as well as disposing them properly.
HERO POLICE OFFICER
Zhang Jie, 37, a police officer of the Public Security Bureau of Bengbu, east China’s Anhui Province, has been honored by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee as “the Model of the Time” for his heroism in combating crimes.
Zhang, also a member of the CPC, has completed many missions for emergencies regardless of his own safety. On January 5, 2016, a criminal suspect threatened to detonate a liquefied gas cylinder and a petroleum canister in a residential building. As a member of the task force for emergencies, Zhang rushed to the suspect at the last second before the explosion. He used his body to shield the explosion, which caused Zhang and a fellow officer to sustain second-degree burns. On November 18, 2016, Zhang became one of the first recipients of the title National Model Policemen, awarded by the Ministry of Public Security.
