Objective To investigate the effect of complete denture restoration on the oral health of the elderly. Methods A total of 230 elderly patients undergoing total denture restoration were enrolled in this study. The effects of complete denture restoration on oral health were investigated by questionnaire. Results The score of Oral Health Influence Scale (OHIP-14) after repair was better than that before repair (P <0.05). The negative impact rates before the repair were as follows: "42.6% of the foods were not eaten, 39.1% of them were dissatisfied with their diet, 37.4% of them were affected by the pronunciation, and the proportions were reduced to 3.5 %, 1.7% and 0.9% respectively. The negative impact rate after repair was lower than that before repair (P <0.05). The satisfaction rate was 91.3% in 3 months after repair and 100.0% in 6 months after repair, both of which were higher than 14.8% before repair (P <0.05). Conclusions Aiming at the elderly patients with dentition defect, the importance of complete denture repair work can be avoided to avoid functional limitations, physiological disorders, pain and other oral function problems caused by the dentition defect, and to improve the oral health-related quality of life of the elderly.
