“The Sound and the Fury” and “A Streetcar Named Desire,” as William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams’ masterpieces, all depict the decaying theme of the family with different people around. Among them, Quentin and Tennessee shaped by Faulkner, and Blanche by Williams, as common gentlemen and ladies in the South of the United States, have certain characteristics in common. Through the contrastive analysis of the three identities of the two protagonists, this article gradually reveals the tragedy of characters. They are the representatives of the southern civilization. In their own body to highlight the southern industrial civilization under the impact of the path of life and the fate of southerners. The tragic fates of the two quixotic characters also suggest that the old order and civilization in the South will eventually be annihilated in the roar of a mighty northern industrial civilization.
