清末民初,在欧风美雨的打击下,中国的佛教界遭遇了中西文化的碰撞,以及庙产兴学而造成的驱逐僧人、捣毁佛像、没收寺产的严重危机,于是,一些有时代感的高僧大德,发扬大乘佛教救世精神,吸取西方文化中的积极因素,自觉或不自觉地开展佛教界的自我革新运动,在思想上,他们亦逐渐由维新而倾向革命,其中如宁波天童寺住持八指头陀及其戒弟子太虚法师,今将他们在辛亥革命前后的活动论述于下。
