TGF-beta can be produced by many normal tissues and transformed cells and is a prototype of a group of polypeptide factors, including Activin, Inhibin and Mǔleran inhibitors, which play a regulatory role in cell proliferation and differentiation. TGF-beta is disulfide linked Dimers, due to their different monomers, are classified into TGF-β_1, TGF-β_2, TGF-β_(1,2) and TGF-β_3. They inhibit both the proliferation of certain cells and their differentiation. Recently, it was found that TGF-β is involved in the differentiation of red blood cells. The authors selected K562 cell line with pluripotent stem cell properties to study the effect of TGF-β_1 on cell proliferation and the induction of hemoglobin accumulation in cells.
