在中国古代教育的历史中,不少教育家对如何读书多有论述,虽不免带有时代的烙印,但深思而慎取,其中不免精华。虚心涵咏,指读书时要虚怀若谷,反复咀嚼。切己体察,是指读书穷理,要用切身的体会去读所有的书。纸上得来终觉浅,绝知此事要躬行。即亲自实行、亲自去做,体现了重视实践、深入实践的精神。两者各有自己的优越性,也都有一定的局限性。因此教学中,应重视接受学习和探究学习并举,取长补短,有效结合,相得益彰
