“引语是一则消息或特写的灵魂,它们能让无趣的故事变得有生命力,能使好故事变得更有趣。”在西方新闻界,能够巧妙地使用合适的引语——尤其是直接引语(direct quotations)——是一个好记者必须具备的素质。巧妙地使用直接引语能为新闻报道增色,但是直接引语必须确保准确使用,因为“引号是对受众的一份誓约,它保证引号中的话是某人说出或写下的原话”。一旦使用直接引语,编辑、记者必须确保引号中的句子是来自当事人的原话,而非杜撰。
