Neurosurgery is a young field of research that focuses on the cognitive and emotional neural foundations upon which individuals take aesthetic or artistic approaches to works of art, non-art objects, or a natural phenomenon. In September 2009, the Copenhagen Aesthetics Conference brought together key researchers in this area to present and discuss current progress. We have summarized some of the topics of this conference, placing neuro-aesthetics in the historical context to discuss its scope and its relationship with other disciplines. We have also identified what we consider to be important and unresolved issues and the main pitfalls and challenges that the field faces and promising ways to study in the future.
