In David Lodge’s “Little World,” a clear-cut motif of text is given to the borrowing of the mythological structure of the Holy Grail knight. However, as many important genres of legends have changed in the “small world”, the pursuit of motifs has lost its original meaning. The writer shows his doubts about meaning and the disclosure of desire chase in the pursuit of motif variation Among them. This article attempts to reveal the anxiety of meaning, as well as the practical significance of this anxiety expressed by Lodge in his pursuit of motifs, from the narrative strategies, modes of discourse and characters of the “small world”.
