Objective To study the effects of oxidative and anti-oxidative activities in the blood of high-arsenic water population and to explore the harm and mechanism of high-arsenic water on the body. Methods The levels of total superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione (GSH) and lipid peroxidation (LPO) in different populations were measured and analyzed . Results SOD increased with the increase of arsenic concentration in drinking water, which was the highest in 36-55 years old group. LPO in control group was significantly lower than that in high water arsenic group (P <0.05) Group (P <0.05). GSH-Px did not change much, only the control group aged over 55 was higher than the high-water arsenic group. Conclusion Drinking high-arsenic water can affect the body’s oxidation and anti-oxidant system. When it is mild to moderate arsenic poisoning, it can cause compensatory increase of anti-oxidants and lipid peroxidation and cause damage to the body.
