For the Swedish mining industry and equipment manufacturing industry, the fierce competition in international mineral markets and the high wages have resulted in lower profit margins. Based on this situation, various reform measures have begun to be implemented in order to make the Swedish mineral sector economically viable and competitive. One of the steps taken in this regard is to carry out a national plan entitled “Mining Technology 2000” (“GRUVTEKNIK 2000”) with the aim of developing methods and techniques that will reduce the cost of underground mining in Sweden. The plan was put forward as early as the early 1980s and officially began in June 1987 and ended in September 1992. The plan is financed by Swedish mining companies, mining equipment manufacturing companies and the Swedish government. The project team compiled a total budget of SEK 350 million (equivalent to US $ 50 million). The program includes directly 12 key technology projects related to the mineral industry (such as ore characterization and mine design, rock breaking, rock mechanics, equipment maintenance, mine automation, etc.). In this article, we will provide first-hand information on the background, main purposes, achievements and lessons learned from this project.
