[U.S. Nuclear Weekly, June 30, 1983, p.7] The United States Pacific Gas and Power Company has decided to retire the Henbottom Bay Nuclear Power Station instead of spending huge sums to transform the power station so that it can withstand the earthquake. According to estimates from the deputy director of the power company, the conversion of this 630,000-kilowatt nuclear power station to a power station meeting the safety standards of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission will cost US$241 million to US$446 million. This is the first commercial BWR nuclear power plant in the United States. It was put into operation in 1963. It was shut down due to refueling in 1976. At that time, it faced safety issues. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission requested that it be resolved.
