It is necessary to know the content of arsenic in the raw materials and products as well as the fate of arsenic in the smelting process because trace amounts of arsenic contained in metallic tungsten can significantly change the mechanical and electrical properties. In 1978 the Ministry of Metallurgical issued a standard method for the determination of trace amounts of arsenic in tungsten. This method is used to analyze tungsten samples with arsenic concentration in the ppm level. The analysis procedure is also cumbersome and inconvenient for routine analysis. This method has greatly evolved since W Holak first determined arsenic by hydride generation-atomic absorption spectroscopy in 1969.
