赫伯·里德是20世纪英国著名的艺术教育家,他提出了健全人格的艺术教育思想,主要观点是美感教育是最重要的教育方式、艺术教育能实现感性与理性的统合和艺术教育能弥补个性与社会的裂缝。里德将审美教育等同于道德教育,认为务必在教育中优先发展各种形式的审美活动,因为在制作美的事物的过程中,会对人产生陶冶性情的道德教育作用。其实任何一门教育,包括自然科学都具有道德教育的作用,同理不能夸大艺术教育在德育中的作用。客观分析里德艺术教育思想的贡献与不足,可为我国艺术教育发展提供有益的借鉴。
