In 1993, Japan’s domestic rice harvest failed to import 2,545,000 tons in a six-month period, which accounted for about 20% of the 13 million tons of rice trade in the world. This move has brought about no small impact on the rice market in Southeast Asia and other rice-producing countries, and set off a considerable upward trend. According to the Thai Trade Commission, Thailand’s grain-free secondary rice was exported to Japan in January-February 1994. When the price was at the highest, it had reached FOB at US$500 per ton, but now it is urgently needed for Japan’s imports. The amount of rice, the same Thai rice has dropped to 355 US dollars per ton, cash transactions even fell to 340 US dollars per ton.
