To determine the technical and economic feasibility of CBM, it is expensive and time-consuming to increase recovery by pressure decay using the injection of desorption gases such as nitrogen and carbon dioxide. A newly developed suite of new methods for assessing the quality of CBM reservoirs has been developed and applied to significantly reduce the evaluation cycle time and cost. The method combines direct field measurement with digital simulation of bottom hole pressure, injection flow rate, and gas flow rates, as well as the formation of gas through jet formation of the coal seam. This article discusses the experimental procedures for small-scale trials, details on-site data analysis and interpretation, and presents the actual results of the current US CBM evaluation study in the San Juan Basin, New Mexico. Describe the key parameters that affect small trials and the consequences of their effects. Proper use of small-scale test results can be used to estimate the project budget for CBM or ECBM field applications. The use of this technology and development cost information can be pre-determined cost-effective production technology programs.
