Tests in some existing hydropower stations show that the vibration induced by Karman vortex shedding can cause fatigue cracks in the fixed vanes of large turbines. The method used by Ontario Power Generation Corporation (OPG) to fully understand the hydrodynamic forces exerted on the fixed guide vanes of a power station in the north of the country is presented. The finite element method (FEM) is used to understand the stresses, deflections and natural frequencies of the blades.
