Nathaniel Hawthorn,writing in the period of American Romanticism adopted the subgenre of Dark Romanticism in his works as a way of opposing to the perfectionist beliefs of Transcendentalism. In criticizing a failed idealism and a radical dualism,Hawthorne’s ta“le The Birth- mark”(1843),demonstrates the author’s negative view of the too dreamy and optimistic tendency inherent in Transcendentalism.
