A large number of epidemiological and laboratory data from rodent models suggest that steroid hormones play an important role in the development of breast cancer. This article analyzes the levels of lymphatic and blood steroid hormones implanted in patients, including premenopausal and postmenopausal patients undergoing total or subtotal resection of primary tumors. Of the patients studied, 28 were histologically proven to be breast cancer and were treated conservatively for the breast. An indirect dose of radiotherapy to the tumor site was implanted immediately within 48 hours of surgery. All patients underwent at least 5 days of axillary drainage. Ten milliliters of venous blood was collected daily on the morning of the surgery and five days thereafter. Lymph was collected with a vacuum container every 24 hours. Blood and lymph were centrifuged and stored at -30°C.
