A history of the University of California Berkeley (University of California, Berkeley) East Asian Library of ancient books collection began in 1896 1. That year, British Fryer (John Fryer, 1839-1928) was hired as Berkeley University of California professor Agassi Oriental language and literature professor. He will own more than 2000 volumes of Chinese books stored on the campus for faculty and students to use, as the school’s first Chinese collection of books. Most of them were printed in the Ming and Qing dynasties. The most important collection was a collection of more than one hundred Western literary works that he presided over and translated at the Shanghai Jiangnan Bureau of Manufacturing, which is a valuable piece of information on the history of science and technology in modern China.
