为了解决生产实际中红豆草种子不足的问题,加快红豆草的繁殖和发展。榆中县1982年开始对红豆草进行了三次扦插试验。第一次试验 1982年8月12日,在阴雨天的情况下将春播红豆草茎秆枝条剪下切短,每节留两个腋柄,插入试验地。经观察,于9月11日所有扦插枝条均由腋叶间重新长出新芽。第二次试验 1982年9月11日用上法取春播红豆草茎秆再次插入刚放过水的试验地,取得了同样效果。第三次试验 1982年11月23日,由于气候已变寒冷,试验在榆中县农业“三结合”中心温室进行。分老(甲组)和新枝(乙组)两组。甲组为4月9日下种的春播枝条(收获种子后的老枝);乙组为7月11日下种的夏播枝条(30%左右已始花)。将试验地开沟溪水后,将枝条插入泥中,然后覆土。经观察,于11月14日新芽开始萌发,12月13日新茎已生长3—8厘米。1983年3月24日新茎已长有2—3个芽,高23—49厘米。两组扦插植株成活率为:甲组48.9%,乙组78.3%。甲组成活率低,可能由于枝条是收获种子后的老枝所致。
