Metonymy is a kind of cultural behavior based on the correlation of time, space and logic, and the adjacentness, and obtaining the meaning from another thing. This kind of behavior makes the acquisition of meaning reflect some uniqueness, and for literature, it creates a very different aesthetic effect. The substitution of adjacency in metonymy suppresses people’s commonsense memories, making the language simple and concise on the one hand, and defaulting on the other. Metonymy also has the legitimacy of the combination of absurdity and embodies the poetic function of language. In addition, metonymy is a paramount metaphor for the proverbial metaphor, providing rich evidence of the thematic composition and proper expression. In short, metonymy, like metaphor, brings enlightenment and surprise to literary performance, and its relationship with literary tradition deserves further digging.
