Lightwave technology seems to be accelerating its expansion in the spread of cable television. It was not confirmed until 1990; for new systems or complex system rebuilds, the fiber was competitive, but not for the upgrading of existing coax systems. There are indications that the optical fiber will soon replace the coaxial cable, the system upgrade. Recently, James A. Chiddix, who pioneered the application of lightwave technology to cable television, predicts that most system upgrades, system rebuilds, and new systems will incorporate a combination of fiber-optic backbone and new fiber-to-feeder architecture Chiddix is the General Manager of Engineering and Technology at American TV Communications, the second largest multi-system cable television operator.
