The novel portrays the love of Frederick Henry, a young American youth, and Kasey Barclay, a nurse during World War I, as well as their fantastic demise in the grim realities of war. This paper focuses on how the author highlights the theme of the novel through natural phenomena such as climate and topography, using rain as the main image, and using contrastive and repetitive techniques. Under the cover of sounding rhetoric, the war brings about frustration, destruction and death.
