Thrombospondins (TSPs) are a family of multidomain extracellular matrix glycoproteins, which consist of five members at present, TSP-1, -2, -3, -4 and TSP-5. TSP-1, which is synthesized and secreted by activated platelets and a variety of cell types including endothelial cells, macrophages, monotypes, fibroblasts, tumor cells and vascular smooth muscular cells, is the best characterized family member.1
