Background: Radiation damage can produce a large number of reactive oxygen species in the body and thus cause peroxidation damage to various parts of the body. Grape seed proanthocyanidins (GSP) have strong antioxidant and scavenging free radical activity, but little is known about the protective effect of radiation damage. Objective: To observe the protective effect of GSP combined with casein on the injury of peroxisome 60 induced by Co-γ radiation in rats. Design: A comparative study of experimental animals. Unit: Third Military Medical University Daping Hospital Nutrition. Materials: The experiment was performed in three rooms of the Institute of Field Surgery, Third Military Medical University from June 2004 to July 2004. The subjects were 80 clean Wistar rats, male and female, weight 180 ~ 220g. Methods: In the experiment, normal control, irradiation control, GSP, GSP + casein were combined with 4 groups with 20 mice in each group. GSP supplemented with 1% GSP on the basis of conventional diet, 1% GSP and 5% casein All groups were free to eat. After 10 days, except for the normal control group, the other rats received 607Gy Co-γ whole body irradiation at one time. On the 7th day after irradiation, 6 rats in each group were randomly selected and killed. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Serum malondialdehyde (MDA) level, serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, spleen index and peripheral blood leukocyte count (WBC). Results: After irradiation, serum MDA significantly increased and SOD activity decreased significantly. The MDA level in GSP group and combined group was significantly lower than that in irradiated group (P <0.01). SOD activity was significantly higher than that in irradiated control group (P <0.01). After radiation injury, the spleen of rats significantly atrophy, spleen index decreased, WBC decreased significantly. The spleen index of GSP group and combined group was significantly higher than that of irradiated control group (P <0.05), WBC was significantly higher than that of irradiated
