现用汉字,是“字素”组成的表形方块字。依书写为先后,有自然的排列顺序。汉字发展到隶、楷字体以后,字形及笔势,大致确定。但是在这长期中,未发现汉字的字母或有系统的基本构成单元,也未发展出一种自然简单的字序,以致编查字典及索引,都有相当困难。近代用机械处理文字,如打字、收发电讯以及电子计算机及控制器的输出、输入,方块汉字就成为问题了。历来已有不少人,利用汉字的形、声、义三种特性,以不同的方法来编辑字典、捡排印刷字:如部首法、笔划多少法、号码法、笔顺法等,在应用上减少了不少困难,但基本问题仍然存在,而且各种方法,都未能解决一码多字的困难。近来有些设计,用声加形,或用形加声等方法来处理电子计算机的汉字输入。这比以前的方法进步,但同码字的困难,并未解决,而且必须限制用字数量,另外还要用特别的规定,来区别同码字,经多年摸索,最近发现了汉字的组形“字素”,解决了上述所有困难,使汉字的应用,在许多方面,会像拉丁文字一样的方便。
