Some time ago, I discovered that one of my chairs had a broken leg. I didn’t think there would be any difficulty in getting it mended ,as there are a whole lot of antique(古董)shops near my home. So I left home one morning carrying the chair with me. I went into the first shop expecting a friendly reception(接待). I was quite wrong. The man wouldn’t even look at my chair.
The second shop, though slightly more polite, was just the same, and the third and the fourth—so I decided that my approach must be wrong.
I went into the fifth shop with a plan in my mind. I placed the chair on the floor and said to the shopkeeper, “Would you like to buy a chair?” He looked it over carefully and said, “Yes, not a bad chair. How much do you want for it, sir?” “Twenty pounds,” I said. “OK,” he said, “I’ll give you twenty pounds.” “It’s got a slightly broken leg,” I said. “Yes, I saw that, it’s nothing.”
Everything was going according to my plan and I was getting excited. “What will you do with it?” I asked. “Oh, it will be easy to sell once the repair is done.” “I’ll buy it,” I said. “What do you mean? You’ve just sold it to me,” he said. “Yes, I know but I’ve changed my mind. I’m sorry I’ll give you twenty-seven pounds for it.” “Your must be crazy,” he said. Then, suddenly the penny dropped. “I know what you want. You want me to repair your chair.” “You’re right,” I said. “And what would you have done if I had walked in and said, ‘Would you mend this chair for me?’” “I wouldn’t have agreed to do it,” he said. “We don’t do repairs, not enough money in it and too much trouble. But I’ll mend this for you, shall we say for a fiver?” He was a very nice man and was greatly amused(感到有趣) by the whole thing.

You may have heard the term “the American Dream”. In 1848, James W. Marshall found gold in California and people began having golden dreams. That 19th century “American Dream” caused the Gold Rush and gave California its nickname(绰号) of the “Golden State”.
The American Dream drove not only 1800s gold-rush prospectors(淘金者) but also waves of immigrants(移民) throughout that century and the next. People from Europe, and a large number of Chinese, arrived in the US in the 19th century hoping that in America they would find gold in the streets. But most, instead, worked as railroad laborers. They created the oldest Chinatown, in San Francisco, and gave the city a Chinese name the old gold hill.
In the 20th century, some critics(评论家) said that it was no longer possible to become rich through determination and hard work. Unfair education for students from poor families and racial discrimination(歧视) almost made the American Dream a nightmare(噩梦).
Then, in the 1990s, California saw a new wave of dreamers in Silicon Valley. People poured their energy into the Internet. This new chapter of the American Dream attracted many business people and young talents from China and India to form start-ups and seek fortunes in America.
Better pay, a nice house, and a rising standard of living will always be attractive. However, the new American Dream is no longer just about money. It encourages Americans to use money with a plan, protect the environment, raise the quality of life, and promote social justice.
The Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has become the model of the new American Dream. After years of hard work, he grew from a poor young man from Austria into a movie superstar and then governor. Many people hope his story can save the American Dream and give California a brighter future.

One spring afternoon five years ago, Jimmy Liao was crying in the hall of Taipei’s Sherwood Hotel. Life seemed unfair. The people who laughed as they walked past were taking their health for granted, just as he used to himself. Now, however, he felt helpless and he couldn’t even show his disappointment in his painting.
Seeking more personally satisfying work, he had just left a successful career as a commercial artist when it seemed that fate played a cruel joke on him. It was at this time that he developed cancer and was unable to work. But that moment in the hotel was a turning point for Jimmy. He began to understand the fact that there is no such a thing as fate, only choices. Since then, he has published several imaginative, illustrated(带插图的) books.
According to Jimmy, you are what you choose to be. You can give up or you can work to be a happier person. Jimmy realized that, while the world sometimes seems unfair, your choice can change your life.
This idea can be found in Jimmy’s books, where his characters show the powerlessness they feel before making their choices. The message that accompanies Jimmy’s drawings, however, is hopeful: Though the world may make us feel small, we must be brave. Everything will be all right for us-as it is for the “small people” in Jimmy’s books—if we make choices that are right for us.
Despite his new fame and wealth, Jimmy prefers working quietly at home with his wife and daughter. He spends his mornings drawing. To Jimmy, living a life as he chooses means much more than money and fame could offer.
  55. Why couldn’t Jimmy Liao show his disappointment in his painting?
  A. Because he had changed his career.
  B. Because he was more than disappointed.
  C. Because he suffered from a fatal disease.
  D. Because he had no money to buy painting tools.
  56. Why did Jimmy Liao give up his successful career as a commercial artist?
  A. Because he wanted to find a job which could make himself happier.
  B. Because he was unable to work but he had to do something for a living.
  C. Because he found that putting pictures in books could make more money.
  D. Because he got entirely tired of the life of a commercial artist
  57. According to Jimmy Liao, when the fate seems to play a joke on us, we should make a new________ .
  A. choice B. plan
  C. program D. change
  58. What can be the best title of the passage?
  A. Choose again if in a difficult situation
  B. Try to be happy when feeling sad
  C. Try to forget everything when ill
  D. Try to think happy things when hopeless

Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Not caring about the money, parents often send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the United States or Australia. They also want their children to take extra-course activities where they will either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes, which will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is. So parents will spend an unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples will buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best early education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents can see that their children’s skills vary, skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize, though, is that today’s children lack self-respect and self-confidence. The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study well, but parents are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever. Parents can achieve this by teaching practical skills like cooking, sewing and doing other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking. So he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. His result, a well-cooked dinner, will give him much satisfaction and a lot of self-confidence. Some old machines, such as broken radio or TV set that you give your child to play with will make him curious and arouse his interest. He will spend hours looking at them, trying to fix them; your child might become an engineer when he grows up. These activities are not merely teaching a child to read a book, but rather to think, to use his mind. And that is more important.
  59. Parents in China, according to the first paragraph,________ .
  A. are very strict with their children.
  B. have spoiled their children
  C. cares much about their children’s education
  D. are rich and willing to spend money for others

When I asked my daughter which item she would keep: the phone, the car, the cooker, the computer, the TV, or her boyfriend, she said the phone . Personally, I could do without the phone entirely, which makes me unusual because the telephone is changing our lives more than any other piece of technology.
Point 1: The telephone creates the need to communicate, in the same way that more roads create more traffic. My daughter comes home from school at 4∶00 pm and then spends an hour on the phone talking to the very people she has been at school with all day. If the phone did not exist, would she have anything to talk about?
Point 2: The mobile phone means that we are never alone.“The mobile saved my life,” says Crystal Johnstone. She had an accident in her Volvo on the highway. Trapped inside, she managed to make the call that brought the ambulance to her rescue.
Point 3: The mobile removes our secret. It allows Marketing Manager of Haba Deutsch, Carl Nicolaisen, to ring his sales staff all round the world at any time of day to ask where they are, where they are going, and how their last meeting went.
Point 4: The telephone separates us. Antonella Bramante in Rome says, “We worked in separate offices but I could see him through the window. It was easy to get his number. We were so near—but we didn’t meet for the first two weeks !”
Point 5: The telephone allows us to reach out beyond our own lives. Today we can talk to several complete strangers simultaneously on chat lines (at least my daughter does. I wouldn’t know what to talk about). We can talk across the world. We can even talk to astronauts (if you know any) while they’re space walking. And, with the phone line hooked up to the computer, we can access the Internet, the biggest library on earth.
  63. According to Point 1 which of the following is TRUE ?
  A. The telephone creates more traffic and communication.
  B. The writer’s daughter has been talking at school all day.
  C. The telephone makes people communicate more.
  D. People communicate more, resulting in traffic accidents.
  64. Which of the following best shows people’s attitude towards mobile phones?
  A. Mobile phones are useful when you have an accident.
  B. Mobile phones bring convenience to people.
  C. Mobile phones can help people go across the world.
  D. Mobile phone numbers of others are not difficult to get.
  65. The underlined word simultaneously most probably means________ .
  A. in a friendly way B. in an easier way
  C. at the same time D. through computers
