This article will give a comparative reading of Duras’ “Lover” and Wei Hui’s “Shanghai Baby”. In my opinion, the two texts are narratives of female autobiographical narratives that describe exotic countries and love, all of which are allegories of borders and transborders. However, the love affair between the white girl and the yellow man in the “lover” was portrayed by Duras as the “vault” of the colonialist. The sexual entanglement between Ni Ke and the German lover in “Shanghai Baby” was reproduced by Wei Hui For the colonized North Korea “Shang ” Yue Yue. The differences in racial identities between the two heroines not only lead to different combinations of power relations in the text, but also bring about radically different reading effects. By revealing these different textual landscapes and reader reactions, we can help us to examine more deeply the means by which the patriarchal system can be used to construct and control the boundaries of women’s lives, as well as the deep plight faced by today’s women in the third world.
