AIM: To observe the expression of hemeoxygenase - 1 (HO - 1) gene in heat shock treated neonatal rat cardiomyocytes and its role in protecting against free radical damage. Methods: Wistar rats 2 to 3 days after birth were randomly divided into male and female. Hearts were harvested and excised to size of 1 mm × 1 mm × 1 mm. The hearts were isolated by trypsinization and cultured.
