In the past literature, there was a lack of analysis and system design for a uniform phased array of sub-arrays of different sizes, although such a structure requires wide bandwidth control of beams. We anticipate that subarrays of different sizes can form sub-arrays of equal size and contiguity through array grating lobes. What we have studied here is a uniform linear array of sub-arrays divided into random and contiguous sizes, with each array element connected to a phase shifter, each of which is in turn equipped with an ordinary delay. This paper derives closed-form expressions for the mean and array coefficient variances that enable us to devise a design step that involves estimating the peak grating lobe level using the probability that the grating lobes exceed an ideal level.
