Citrus growers are always interested in new varieties, but they usually care about nothing more than precocity, good quality or high yield. Joseph Maranto, farm consultant at Kern County, describes a citrus variety that can be used for making spices rather than for consumption. Among citrus cultivated at the University of California at Denver, there are three strains of barberry, a little-known citrus variety in the area, which is already cultivated for spices in southern Italy and is also produced on a small area along the Ivory Coast of Africa.
