The early British tradition of pastoralism portrayed the Americas as a garden-like place where the arrival of European invaders brought the imagination of writers to pastoral lands and they dreamed of creating their own life in this primeval forest. To them, this lush, plum garden area can bring huge profits to them in addition to meeting their dreams in the field. In Morrison’s novel “A Little Mercy,” it shows the story of a pastoral dream of a white Caucasian in Europe. The hero Jacob Wacker constructed his idyllic homeland. In the era of gradual racism, Xanadu can not escape the fate of falling apart, “a little compassion” as the elegy of pastoralism.
