Armed conflicts will inevitably take a toll on “cultural property” (here referring to both physical sites such as ruins and buildings, but also movable artifacts) as well as broader “cultural heritage” (which includes intangible heritage Such as songs, dances, and oral traditions that are memorized by individuals and communities and “inherited”. The war destroyed many sites and things, killing many non-combatants. Most people can only regard it as the unfortunate but unmanageable outcome of the conflict. However, research shows that if heritage communities take reasonable measures at the right time, damage to at least part of cultural property can be reduced or avoided at least. This does not just mean taking immediate action either before or after the conflict
