非均匀沙运动规律与均匀沙存有明显的不同。本文从非均匀沙运动特点出发，简要阐述了非均匀沙的运动机理，利用滚动平衡方程式建立了能反映非均匀沙粗化、细化过程和床沙受暴露、隐蔽作用的起动流速公式，利用实测资料率定计算公式中的系数。与其它起动流速公式相比，本文推导的起动流速公式较好地反映了非均匀沙的起动特性：较细的非均匀床沙较粒径均匀的同粒径床沙难于起动，而较粗的非均匀床沙较粒径均匀的同粒径床沙易于起动。
