The CDC6600 is the largest and fastest computer system in the world under development in the United States. The system uses a total of about 500,000 silicon transistors to make up to 8,000 printed circuit card inserts. Using more than eight million cores with an internal diameter of 19 mils (about 0.48 mm), the system consists of a total of 131,072 words 60) central memory and ten 4096 words (12 words per word) of peripheral memory.
